Just south of the Sphinx is the Valley temple, built with enormous stones excavated out from the bedrock of the Sphinx Enclosure. The Valley Temple and Sphinx Temple both, then, come from the same time period as the Sphinx itself. This is also demonstrated by the fact that the stones are so big and characteristically free of any markings or glyphs. Here Mohamed Ibrahim points out a compound curve perfectly executed in rose granite. The glass window was laid over a pit, in which was discovered the famous statue of Khafre showing Horus cleverly concealed behind his headdress. This lead many Egyptologists to conclude that Khafre built this temple, but he was merely the restorer. The temple tells us in a thousand ways that it was really from the earlier Egypt – closer to 12,000 years old rather than 4,500.
